Shuriken (Proto) – an ultra-wide 7075 monometal balancing speed and stability

Dave Geigle, 5-time European YoYo Champion

Dave’s take

“What makes Shuriken especially interesting to me is that this is still a genuine prototype from July YoYo’s next development project. A width of almost 55 mm sounds like a massive piece of metal, but the extremely thin 7075 body makes it feel much more agile than those dimensions suggest.
I really like the idea behind it: long, stable spins combined with fast and precise control. If you enjoy ultra-wide competition YoYos and also like owning an early stage of a design project, this is a pretty special piece.”

Dave Geigle · 5-time European YoYo Champion · Playing since 1997
  • Almost 55 mm wide H-profile → enormous catch zone for modern competition tricks
  • 7075 aluminum → allows an extremely thin yet rigid body construction
  • W/Z concept: Wave + Zap → long stable spins combined with fast, precise control
  • Surprisingly agile → designed to remain maneuverable despite its extreme width
  • Genuine prototype edition → a small pre-production run before the final development stage

Perfect for you if …

  • you love ultra-wide modern YoYos and huge catch zones
  • you want speed and quick direction changes combined with strong stability
  • you want a high-quality 7075 monometal for technical competition play
  • you enjoy collecting prototypes and unusual development models

Probably not ideal for you if …

  • you prefer compact or traditionally narrow YoYos
  • you only want fully finalized production models and have no interest in prototypes

W stands for Wave. Z stands for Zap.

Shuriken came out of a new development project at July YoYo. The internal W/Z concept represents two target characteristics: “Wave” stands for long and stable rotation, while “Zap” represents sharp, quick and precise control.

The goal is therefore not simply maximum width or maximum spin power, but a combination of stability, long rotation and direct maneuverability.

Ultra-wide without becoming a brick

At nearly 55 mm wide, Shuriken gives you a huge target for landing the string. This is especially valuable for hops, fast mounts and large modern competition elements.

To prevent those dimensions from becoming unnecessarily sluggish, July YoYo uses high-strength 7075 aluminum with an extremely thin body construction. This helps retain a surprisingly agile feel despite the extreme width.

A genuine look into the development process

This Shuriken is explicitly a prototype produced before the final production version. For players and collectors, that is part of the appeal: you are not simply buying a finished release, but an early development stage of a future July YoYo project.

Its performance is already clearly aimed at modern competition play.

JulyYoYo

JulyYoYo was founded back in 2020 by the Chinese YoYo player nicknamed “Hornet”. JulyYoYo initially flew under the radar of many players, but thanks to various champions in China and collaborations with other brands as well as a very professional appearance on Instagram, the brand has made a name for itself.
The designs clearly show that there is a real YoYo player with passion behind the brand and not a run-of-the-mill factory that also produces a few YoYos on the side. The quality of workmanship is absolutely world-class, as JulyYoYos are manufactures exclusively in the factory with probably the highest quality standards in the world.
