“Shutter makes the most sense when you look at its history: Gentry Stein won the 2014 World YoYo Contest 1A division with it, and afterwards it became one of the most recognizable metal YoYos ever made.
By current standards, it is neither extremely wide nor maximally rim-weighted. That is also what makes it pleasant and honest to play: controllable, powerful enough and without giving you every string hit through oversized dimensions. To me, it still makes a very good practice YoYo and first serious metal throw.”
Shutter is Gentry Stein’s signature YoYo and one of the designs that helped define a generation of modern play. Gentry used the design to win the 2014 World YoYo Contest 1A title.
That matters because Shutter was not simply marketed as a performance model – its ability was proven on the biggest competition stage.
YoYo design has evolved considerably since 2014. Modern competition YoYos tend to be wider and use more aggressive weight distribution.
As a result, Shutter now has an almost pleasantly classic personality. It remains stable and capable while asking for slightly cleaner technique than an extreme modern wide design.
That makes it an excellent practice YoYo – and still a very solid entry into high-quality unresponsive metal play.
