1.Play styles
| 1A / Single A / One Handed | Playstyle involving one yo-yo | |
| 2A / Double A / Two Handed | Playstyle focusing on looptricks, with a yo-yo on each hand | |
| 3A / Triple A | Playstyle focusing on stringtricks, with a yo-yo on each hand | |
| 4A / Offstring | Playstyle where the string is not attached to the yo-yo; similar to Diabolos | |
| 5A / Freehand / Counterweight | Playstyle, where the string is not attached to yourhand, but rather a counterweight, e.g. a dice or a bouncing ball |
2.Technical terms (Tricks)
| Stringtricks | Tricks, where the yo-yo mostly hops or rolls on the string | |
| Mount | The first position and every after it, you can just hold still without the yo-yo falling out e.g. Double or Nothing or Split Bottom Mount | |
| Whips | Tricktype, where you use a flick of your hand to "whip" an open string loop back into the stringgap | |
| Slacks | Tricktype, where you move a "slack" part of the string to form a new mount | |
| Suicides | Tricktype, where you let the yo-yo carry a string loop and then catch it afterwards | |
| Looptricks | Tricks, where you regenerate the yo-yo into a given direction without catching | |
| Sleeper | Trick, where the yo-yo is spinning freely at the end of the string | |
| Bind | This trick is the new way of getting a modern yo-yo back to your hand! Very important!! | |
| Response | Ability of the yo-yo to get back to your hand; the more responsive a yo-yo is, the better it will wake up from a Sleeper | |
| Smoothness | Ability of the yo-yo to slide smoothly across a string between string tricks |
3.Technical terms (Hardware)
| Starburst | A "notched ring" around the yo-yos bearing to generate friction and so boost the yo-yos response | |
| Yo-Ring / O-Ring | O-ring, which covers the role of a starburst as the responsesystem | |
| ResponsePad | Flat pad, which covers the role of a starburst as the responsesystem. Most of the time coated with a rubbery material | |
| Bearing | The yo-yos axle, mostly ball-bearings, used to minimize friction between the string and the yo-yos axis and thus increasing sleeptime | |
| Stringgap | Part of the yo-yo between the two yo-yo halves, where the string resides | |
| Imperial Shape | Form of a yo-yo, where the yo-yo gets wider when you go from the outer diameter to the center of the yo-yo. Better suited for looptricks | |
| Butterfly Shape | Form of a yo-yo, which could be described as a reverse Imperial Shape. Better suited for string tricks, because of the wider string gap |
