If you want to buy a YoYo, the most important questions are how much experience you already have and which tricks you want to learn. Modern trick YoYos are very different from simple toy-store yo-yos: the bearing, shape, weight distribution and response system determine how long a YoYo spins, how easy it is to control and which tricks are possible.
At Yo-Shop.de you'll find YoYos for every skill level – from your first responsive beginner YoYo to unresponsive aluminium and bi-metal competition models.
If you have never played YoYo before or only know the basics, we recommend starting with a responsive YoYo.
A responsive YoYo returns to your hand when you tug on the string. This makes learning much easier – but it can still throw a proper Sleeper and is fully capable of real YoYo tricks.
The main difference is the setup: responsive YoYos usually use a narrower bearing and a more direct response system. This still gives you enough free spin for your first string tricks, while you do not yet need to master a Bind to bring the YoYo back to your hand.
A responsive YoYo is therefore not just made for simple up-and-down play. It is a genuine beginner-friendly trick YoYo designed to make learning the fundamentals easier.
Upgradeable beginner YoYos are particularly useful: they start responsive and can later be converted to an unresponsive setup using a wider bearing. Your YoYo can therefore grow with your skills instead of needing to be replaced immediately.
When you're starting out, simply buying a YoYo is often not enough. You'll also need replacement strings, clear instructions and ideally a setup that allows you to progress later on.
That's why we often recommend a complete beginner YoYo set instead of just buying a single YoYo.
Depending on the model, our beginner sets may include:
a high-quality, upgradeable beginner YoYo
plenty of replacement strings
accessories for maintenance and conversion
additional components for switching to an unresponsive setup
and most importantly, a German-language video course that guides you step by step from your first throw to advanced tricks
For beginners, this makes a real difference: you don't have to figure out which accessories you need, and you can learn the tricks in a logical order.
If you're completely new to YoYo and want the easiest possible start, a well-designed beginner set is often the best choice.
A responsive YoYo returns to your hand when you tug on the string. It still uses a bearing, can spin freely and allows you to throw a Sleeper and learn many proper YoYo tricks.
The narrower bearing and more direct response system simply make the YoYo react more easily when you pull the string. That's what makes learning easier.
An unresponsive YoYo does not return simply by pulling the string. Instead, it is brought back using a trick called a Bind. Almost all modern advanced and competition players use unresponsive YoYos because they spin very freely and allow complex string tricks.
Once you can throw a consistent Sleeper and know – or are ready to learn – the Bind, you are ready for an unresponsive YoYo.
The material alone does not determine how good a YoYo is. The important question is what you want to do with it.
Plastic YoYos are durable and excellent for beginners. High-quality modern plastic YoYos can already offer impressive performance and are also fun for experienced players.
Aluminium YoYos are precision CNC-machined and provide a direct and controlled playing experience. Good mono-metal YoYos are fully capable professional YoYos and don't have to be expensive.
If you're looking for your first metal YoYo, there are already excellent models below €50 that are capable of very advanced tricks.
Bi-metal YoYos usually combine an aluminium body with stainless-steel weight rings. This allows more weight to be positioned towards the outer rims, creating high stability and powerful spin. Bi-metal designs are therefore especially popular for demanding tricks and competition play.
The most expensive YoYo is not automatically the best YoYo for you. A good model should match your playing style and current skill level.
The DNA has become one of the most recognizable modern YoYo tricks. The YoYo spins horizontally on your finger before the string wraps around it in a spiral.
If you specifically want to learn DNA or fingerspins, look for a YoYo with a suitable fingerspin hub. Beginner-friendly designs guide your finger towards the center automatically, making the trick considerably easier.
Many modern YoYos are designed with fingerspins in mind – from affordable plastic models to professional aluminium YoYos.
Most modern string tricks are played in the 1A division. One YoYo is attached to the string and moved on and around the string during tricks.
There are also several other styles, for example:
2A / Looping: Two responsive YoYos are played simultaneously for fast looping and repetition tricks.
4A / Offstring: The YoYo is not attached to the string and can be thrown, caught and played through the air.
Both styles require specially designed YoYos. A normal 1A YoYo is not the right choice for them.
You can buy a good beginner YoYo for well under €30. A high-quality aluminium YoYo typically costs around €30 to €60.
Above that range you will find more sophisticated aluminium, bi-metal and competition models. These can offer more stability, precision and spin power – but you do not need them to learn.
For beginners, choosing the right YoYo for your skill level is much more important than spending as much as possible.
For children, age, hand size and frustration tolerance matter more than maximum performance.
For younger children – depending on coordination, usually under around 8/9/10 years old – a simple responsive YoYo is often the best choice. More ambitious kids from around primary-school age can already start with a high-quality, upgradeable beginner YoYo and use it later for more advanced tricks.
