CameYo Mondial – a piece of German YoYo history from 1998

Dave Geigle, 5-time European YoYo Champion

Dave’s take

“If you have been playing since 1997 like I have, Mondial is not simply an old YoYo – it is a genuine piece of German YoYo history. In the late 1990s, CNC aluminum, ball bearings and finely adjustable gaps were far from standard.
By modern standards, nobody would choose Mondial over a current competition YoYo for pure performance. But that is not the point: this YoYo shows what high-end looked like before modern YoYos even developed their current form. As a collectible, I find that incredibly interesting.”

  • Original German design from 1998 → developed by Harry Baier and CameYo
  • Aluminum body with rubber rims → highly sophisticated construction for its era
  • Fine adjustable string gap → ratcheting mechanism for repeatable gap settings
  • Integrated lubrication system → bearing could be lubricated externally without opening the YoYo
  • Historically important collectible → rights to Mondial were later acquired by Duncan

Perfect for you if …

  • you collect historical YoYos from the 1990s
  • you are interested in the technical evolution of modern YoYo design
  • German YoYo history and CameYo interest you
  • you want a unique collectible rather than maximum current-day performance

Probably not ideal for you if …

  • you simply want the best possible YoYo for modern competition tricks
  • you expect modern superwide dimensions, silicone pads and current unresponsive performance

In 1998, Mondial was genuinely high-tech

CameYo Mondial was designed by German YoYo developer Harry Baier and released in 1998.

Ball-bearing aluminum YoYos were far from ordinary at the time. Mondial went even further by combining its metal body with rubber outer rings and an unusually precise adjustable string gap.

A repeatable adjustable gap

Rather than simply twisting the two halves continuously against each other, Mondial used a ratcheting mechanism. This allowed the gap to be adjusted in small steps and then held in a defined position.

At a time when response and gap tuning was considerably more experimental than today, this was a remarkable engineering feature.

Lubrication without opening the YoYo

Another distinctive feature was the integrated injection system. Lubricant could be introduced through an opening in the hub and fed toward the bearing without fully disassembling the YoYo.

It may sound almost eccentric today – but in the late 1990s, it was genuinely advanced.

From CameYo to Duncan

The design rights were later acquired by Duncan, who also produced their own version of Mondial.

That makes the original CameYo release particularly interesting: it represents a short but unusually innovative chapter of German YoYo development.
